Lodge of Sorrow: Don Wakefield (60 Year Member)

Donald Wakefield

HOMER – Donald Irvin Wakefield, 91, of Homer passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2011, at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana.
He was many things to us, a companion, a father, a grandfather, a brother, a friend, but most of all, he was a gentle man who cared deeply for others.
Born Feb. 25, 1920, to Irvin and Bessie Peters Wakefield, he grew up just outside of Homer with his four brothers, Ralph (deceased), Dale, Robert and Jim (deceased); and three sisters, Marie, Laverne and Arlene.
Don was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 752nd Tank Battalion in Italy and North Africa. He was a life member of the Elks for 58 years, a 63-year member of the American Legion and a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge.
He owned several businesses in Homer throughout his lifetime, including a corn-shelling business and an anhydrous ammonia plant. He retired in 1985 and enjoyed traveling and visiting his family.
Those honoring Don's life include his companion, Inez Brewer; his three children, Jan (Wayne), Susie and Russ (Sharon); Inez's children, Terry (Deb) and Karen (Dusty); nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation with the family is from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Kirby Funeral Home, 708 S. Main St., Homer, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Memorials should be made to the Homer Fire Department.
